Around 12 per cent of the UK population is considering spending Christmas abroad this year, with Italy, Spain and France topping the list of most popular destinations, according to Sainsburys Bank Travel Insurance .
Research highlights London will have the highest percentage of people travelling abroad over the festive period, followed by Yorkshire and Humberside .
Out of the people spending the festive season abroad, 8 per cent intend to do so in Spain, which is proving to be the most popular overseas destination this Christmas .
However, the bank is concerned that some 457,000 people (8 per cent) might not arrange travel insurance and Robert O'May, travel insurance manager at Sainsbury's Bank, advises all holiday makers to insure themselves for unexpected circumstances.
"Taking a break at Christmas is a perfect way to escape the cold British climate, or leave behind the stresses and strains of a busy 2006 with a winter sports break," said Mr OMay.
"Whatever your plans this Christmas, if you are travelling overseas, ensure you have adequate travel insurance in place should you encounter any problems."
The Banks annual insurance cover is available from £46.65 online, and was named Best Travel Insurance provider in the 2005 Your Money Direct Awards selected by a panel of consumers and industry judges.
