Holidaymakers find holidays abroad expensive

Wed, 01 Mar 2006

The cost of buying airplane tickets has gone down but for Brits who like to holiday in Europe the high costs on reaching their holiday destination is a shock for some.

Halifax Travel Insurance claim that due to the changing value of the pound, tourists’ money today doesn’t go as far as it did four years ago. A country to illustrate the point is Spain where British holidaymakers buying power has diminished by a fifth compared to value of the pound in 2002.

Similarly holidaymakers travelling to Italy and Germany this summer will need 13 per cent more money with them compared to four years ago. The insurance company say because of the drop in purchasing power, tourists should count what the total cost of the holiday really is.

Vicky Emmott, from the Halifax said, "It is important when choosing a holiday destination that travellers not only consider the cost of travel and accommodation, but also how much it will cost to purchase goods and services when they are in the country.

"Holidaymakers should check the newspapers to see how the pound is performing against other currencies and ask their travel operator how expensive it is to eat out and visit attractions at their preferred situation."
