UK Seaside Resorts Losing Tourists And Glamour

Tue, 28 Nov 2006

The UK’s seaside destinations are still a big hit with Britons but overseas visitors are giving the resorts a miss, according to new figures released today.

A list compiled of the top 20 visited hot spots in the UK showed that seaside locations featured strongly, but only one coastal resort was in the top 20 for visits by foreign residents.

Towns such as Blackpool, Scarborough, Skegness in Lincolnshire, Bournemouth, Great Yarmouth and Brighton and Hove were all included in the list.

Not surprisingly London was the top UK destination for foreign travellers last year, receiving nearly 13.9 million visits, with Edinburgh in second ahead of Manchester .

Liverpool took in 438,000 overseas residents last year, a rise of 109 per cent as it came in at sixth in the list.

London was also the most popular destination for local visitors with 4.88 million trips people making trips to the capital.

Seaside resort Blackpool was second with 1.63 million visits, and Edinburgh third with 1.37 million visits.

All figures were released at the annual convention of the Association of British Travel Agents .

Tom Wright, the chief executive of VisitBritain said, "City breaks have become one of the most popular options for British and international travellers, but the research shows some very different trends.

"Our international visitors' choice of destination is heavily influenced by the increasing number of flights now arriving into our capitals and regional cities .

"For Britons, while city destinations are increasingly popular, it's obvious that we still have an abiding affection for the traditional seaside holiday," he concluded.
