British travellers and holidaymakers looking at trips to America so they can take advantage of its attractive exchange rates, have been advised that estimated savings may not be as readily available as first thought.
Statistics from the Post Office have shown that despite the current $2 to a pound rate, which makes electrical items an attractive buy, essentials such as water and sun cream along with popular purchases such as beer can cost up to four times as much in the US .
For the best value for money countries such as Bulgaria come out on top, with the eastern European countrys total shopping basket costing as little as £16.86, compared to Americas £69.41, the Post Office advises.
Included in the total cost is the average price of a three-course meal for two with wine, which resulted in a £52 cost in the US compared to Bulgarias under £10 cost.
Its not all bad news for the US as it still provides the cheapest prices when it comes to car rentals, with average prices of £50.48 for a three-day rental .
Head of travel at the Post office, Kevin McAdam commented, "You have to be careful when comparing costs in different countries. It all depends on their relative cost of living and it pays to be aware that favourable currency rates - like those currently available for the US dollar - do not necessarily mean a destination will be cheap."
Economists last week advised that the pound was likely to soon fall from its current $2 level due to the changing face of the UK economy.
