Travelodge Enters Online Insurance Market

Fri, 13 Apr 2007

UK hotel chain Travelodge is entering into the insurance market and is launching online travel insurance .

The company, known well for its low rates and basic accommodation, has started selling travel cover through its website, Travelodge.co.uk/insurance, which currently receives around 2 million visitors each month. Cover starts from £6.61 via the website.

The budget-hotel chain is white-labelling policies from American insurance giant AIG, who are shirt sponsors for Manchester United Football Club, and are underwritten by New Hampshire Insurance Company and Landmark Insurance Company .

It aims to take business from rival companies by offering lower prices on everything from annual policies to European trips. Online bookings are becoming increasingly popular with 83 per cent of Travelodge bookings made through the company’s website.

Guy Parsons, Travelodge’s Chief Operating Officer said, "Going on holiday without travel insurance is like playing at a roulette table with your health as chips. There are many reasons why you should always be insured on your travels but fluctuating foreign medical costs means that treatment for even the most innocuous injury abroad can seriously dent your finances ."

It is believed that Travelodge could follow up by introducing a series of other insurance products, such as breakdown cover .

The group, bought by Dubai International Capital last September for £675 million, has over 300 hotels throughout the UK, Spain and Ireland, and is on track to add a further 32,000 UK rooms over the next four years.
