Around 18 million drivers are set to take to Britains roads this bank holiday weekend, making them as busy as last years August Bank Holiday, motoring groups have revealed.
The AA has predicted that, despite the recent miserable weather, 37 per cent of UK motorists have pre-planned a getaway, with a majority heading to the seaside resorts in search of beaches.
Temperatures are expected to be as high as 26C (79F) in some part of Britain on Sunday, although Scotland will be wet.
Berkshire and West Yorkshire are expected to heavily congested, as festival-goers make their way to the Reading and Leeds music festivals, with heavy traffic expected on popular routes - particularly on Friday afternoon and Monday morning.
The M4 (around junctions 11 and 12), the M1, M62 and M621 around Leeds are all expected to be congested, along with delays on the A40 heading out of London due to lane closures, as a result of the Notting Hill Carnival .
Gareth Harvey, forecaster for MeteoFroup UK, said: "It's certainly going to be a lot better than it has been compared with the rest of the summer. In England and Wales, almost everywhere will see a lot of sunshine and temperatures will be around 22-23C (71-73F)."
In addition, the UKs four largest airports are set to see around 1.9 million travellers pass through their gates, with people wanting to make most of the three-day weekend.
According to British Airways, the most popular European destinations this weekend are Paris, Rome and Nice, while the airline also expects to fly more than 20,000 passengers to Glasgow and Edinburgh .
Meanwhile Eurostar, the high-speed train company for the Channel Tunnel, is anticipating a record 153,000 travellers over the next four days.
