The county of Hampshire has been named as Britains camping capital, according to a new research .
A survey from Yell.com revealed that thousands of campers who chose to go back to basics for a cheap and cheerful holiday in the area were left more than satisfied, whether under canvas or in the luxury of a caravan .
The county was awarded the title of most popular camping destination, despite the rain soaked summer and campers are continuing to arrive in their droves, with many of the New Forest's campsites currently fully booked.
Forest Holidays, which operates ten campsites in the New Forest, said the local economy will receive a £7m injection thanks to campsite visitors to the area this summer.
Although the miserable weather has put some people off, the company still expects to have welcomed more visitors to Hampshire's campsites this year than last.
"Majestic broadleaf forest, attractive lowland heath and chocolate box villages, combine with easy access to the coast to make Hampshire a popular choice with campers," said a spokesman for Forest Holidays .
The research from Yell.com, which analysed holiday-themed enquiries on its search engine, showed that Glasgow and Bristol were named second and third respectively by campers, while Essex and Dorset completed the top-five list of venues where people searched for camping facilities.
Ruth Walmsley, spokeswoman for the 420,000-member Camping and Caravanning Club, said: "We have seen an increase this year in the number of people using campsites, even in view of the weather ."
"One of the reasons for that is the incredible campsites we have in the UK in some of the most beautiful locations."
