Sri Lanka is becoming an increasingly popular holiday destination with Brits as the countrys tourism continues to recover from the devastating effects of the tsunami .
The Sri Lankan Tourism Promotional Bureau (SLTPB) expects to welcome around 100,000 visitors from the UK this year, up from the 88,000 tourists that arrived in 2006.
Figures for October revealed the number of British visitors to Sri Lanka had increased by 29.4 per cent on the previous year, although visitor numbers from January to October were down by 3.2 per cent from 2006.
One of the major factors behind the increased optimism is the current Test Cricket series being played in the country, which has prompted around seven thousand England fans to make the trip to Sri Lanka and voice their support.
UK travel companies have given £1 million to the SLTPB for joint promotional activities in order to help rebuild tourism in Sri Lanka .
A spokesman said: "This ongoing support from the trade is extremely important for this small island, particularly given the recent isolated military conflicts and their perceived threat to tourists ."
Sri Lanka, situated just off the southern tip of India, boasts a sub-tropical climate, fabulous beaches, jungles, mountains, and rivers - all of which help make the island a popular year-round holiday destination .
