Despite huge publicity following the controversial subject of environment damage due to jet-fuelled holidays, the average Brit is following in PM Tony Blair's footsteps and booking more annual trips abroad .
American Express Insurance Services carried out research, which reveals that Britons average three short breaks per year, with a further 5 per cent increase in foreign holidays planned for 2007.
The annual study also highlights certain expectations for the year, such as how the number of trips made by Britons abroad will increase for a third consecutive year.
Overall a 3 per cent rise is predicted in all UK and foreign trips, such as weekend breaks, business trips and holidays (more than five days).
However, the most significant rises are in leisure breaks, where there is an 11 per cent rise for UK weekend breaks and a 12 per cent increase for short trips abroad . Planned holidays in the UK will see a 3 per cent increase and a 5 per cent increase in foreign holidays are predicted to take place.
Joanne Field, Marketing Manager at American Express Insurance Services said, "Not only are Britons planning more trips both here and abroad, but they are booking more independently than last year."
For the American Express survey respondents, visiting family and visiting friends were also important reasons for having a short break, as well as going on holiday .
