British holidaymakers are being put off taking breaks in the UK due to high costs, resulting in an increase of trips being taken abroad.
According to a survey by insurance company More Than, around 20 per cent would like to reduce their carbon footprint by taking a local break instead of travelling abroad but are annoyed at the high level of costs of UK holidays .
Just under 2000 people took part in the survey, with 49 per cent stating that British holidays are over priced and another 20 per cent believing resorts are not as friendly as those abroad.
A total of 45 per cent admitted to being concerned about carbon emissions produced through flying abroad, although 22 per cent of all those polled said that costs of UK breaks must be redeuced in order for it to be considered as an altenative to foreign travel .
When asked to comment on certain UK locations, 38 per cent responded by saying Cornwall was too expensive, while 28 per cent believed Devon was also too much to visit.
Mike Holliday-Williams of More Than said, "Although we are all being encouraged to think green, our research reveals that the cost of holidays in this country is a huge barrier."
"Holiday operators should be aware of this so that they can think of ways to entice Brits to holiday in the UK so that we can all work harder to reduce our impact on the environment," he added.
