Holidaymakers Face Long Delays and Disruptions in Wake of Airport Attack

Thu, 05 Jul 2007

Holidaymakers and commuters across the UK face miserable delays as security measures have increased considerably throughout Britain’s airports and transport networks in wake of last weekend’s car bomb attacks.

Major transport hubs such as Heathrow’s Terminal Four and Waterloo train station were evacuated yesterday after a suspect bag, identified by an X-ray machine, was picked up by a passenger.

As a result all outgoing flights were either delayed or cancelled as hundreds of passengers who had been cleared through security had to be re-screened, with thousands being left to face extra long queues .

With the peak summer-travel period being the busiest of the year fears have been raised that the disruption could lead to total chaos across the country .

Airports and railway stations across Britain are on the highest state of alert with armed police and sniffer dogs on patrol 24/7, while other anti-terrorism measures such as stop-and-search campaigns and concrete barriers (blocking off pick-up and drop-off points) have also been introduced.

This has lead to calls for all holidaymakers to travel to airports via public transport as some of the measures, such as the Police stop-and-search campaigns on major roads and motorways, are causing huge delays.

But transport analysts stated that most of the problems were being caused by a combination of forgetful passengers abandoning their bags and holidaymakers who panic when spotting an unattended bag .
