UK holidays are set to rise in popularity despite this summers poor weather, according to new research.
Direct Line travel insurance research in conjunction with the Future Foundation, has forecast that the number of Brits taking annual holidays in the UK will soar to 129 million by 2027 an increase of 21 million trips compared to current figures.
British holidaymakers are expected to take an average of three holidays a year in their own country, which will result in a £15 billion boost to the UK tourist industry. Expenditure is expected to nearly double to £31 billion by 2027 from a total of £16 billion today.
The research found several factors that will drive the increase in domestic holidays . These included a new-found confidence in the British weather, with 29 per cent of holidaymakers citing the expectation of better weather as a decisive reason, while others believe the face of the UK holiday will change, with outdoor pursuits such as camping, hiking, climbing and mountain biking becoming more popular.
The report from Direct Line Travel also reveals that a revival in national pride is also a contributing factor towards the increase in UK holidays . Two thirds of British holidaymakers stated that they enjoy the opportunity to see their own country, while over one in two domestic holidaymakers also cited enjoying the chance to learn more about the UK .
More worryingly, the research revealed that travel insurance is being neglected by many, with 67 per cent of people who have taken a break in Britain during the last 12 months doing so without purchasing travel insurance .
Chris Price, Business Manager at Direct Line Travel Insurance, commented: "It is important to remember to take out travel insurance to protect yourself should things go wrong, no matter how familiar the surroundings are."
"Travel insurance is just as vital to have on a UK holiday to cover unforeseen circumstances such as cancellation of a trip or loss of personal possessions."
