Overseas credit and debit fraud continues to affect British travellers, according to a study by insurance company InsureandGo.
The survey reveals some 1.3 million holidaymakers have become the victims of fraud over the last five years, with a third of them being defrauded in the last 12 months.
Over 2,000 people took part in the survey, with 23 per cent admitting to having over £1,000 stolen while on holiday .
Londoners have been the biggest victims of fraud in the last five years, followed by holidaymakers from the North West and the Midlands .
Out of the 1.3 million people defrauded during the last five years, a total of 37,800 had lost more than £4,000.
"As our research shows, holiday card fraud is a massive problem and is continuing to get worse, said Perry Wilson from InsureandGo.
"It has become more common for people to have their cards or details stolen, or money stolen or skimmed from their accounts ."
The insurance company, Britains largest direct travel insurer, is now launching a new card which it hopes will help tackle the ongoing problem of fraud.
