London Heathrow airport's new Terminal 5 (T5) will open its doors on March 27, 2008, just under one year from now, announced airport operator BAA.
Construction work began in 2002 on the £4.3 billion terminal complex and developers predict more than 90 per cent of all construction is complete, with the British Airports Authority (BAA) saying the project was on time and on budget .
Heathrow is one of the worlds busiest airports, and despite only having enough terminal facilities to accommodate 45 million travellers, airport chiefs predict 68 million passengers will be flying through it this year.
The next 12 months will include an intensive six-month trial of the terminal's facilities in September, when 16,000 people will be recruited to act as passengers to help test baggage, check-in, and security systems .
Tony Douglas, chief executive of BAA Heathrow said, "London is a world city, a global financial centre and needs a world class airport."
"When T5 opens and 30 million passengers move out of existing terminals, for the first time we will have space to breath in the central terminal area."
Mr Douglas added, "By 2012, we aim to have either rebuilt or redeveloped our existing facilities and returned Heathrow to its rightful status as the world's leading international airport."
The state-of-the art complex will feature 60 new aircraft stands, two satellite buildings (the second is due for completion in 2010), rail links to London and its underground service, and a variety of shops such as Harrods, Paul Smith, and Tiffany.
