Roughly one out of every five suitcases (22 per cent) are lost when carried on board planes, and air travellers face longer than ever waits at the conveyor belt when they arrive at their destinations, according to new figures.
A study carried out by swiftcover.com discovered that 21 per cent of air travellers have to spend more than £100 to cover the cost of missing suitcases, while 55 per cent of those who have their bags lost upon arrival are forced to wait over 24 hours for them to be delivered back.
According to estimates from the online insurer 20 per cent of British travellers have forket out at least £212 million in costs on replacing their lost luggage . The insurance company added that the coming summer will see millions more facing the same problems, with one in five air passengers forced to spend their whole trip away without their suitcases .
Director of underwriting at Swiftcover, Craig Staniland, commented: "Holidaymakers appear to face increasing stress when jetting off for their well-earned breaks ."
"As long as you have adequate travel insurance, losing your suitcase should not hit you in the pocket, but, for the majority of people, it's often the sentimental value of personal belongings and the lost time on holiday trying to locate your bags that cannot be replaced."
The study highlighted how one third of UK couples and families divide their clothing among several items of luggage so that clothes remain available in case of lost baggage, while a further 35 per cent carry extra underwear and spare toothbrushes as a precaution.
The advice to all air passengers, in light of the new figures and evidence of lost suitcases, is to take out comprehensive travel insurance to ensure they are fuly covered and face as little inconvenience as possible if their luggage goes missing.
