The British Airports Authority (BAA) has begun plans on implementing more touch screen self-service systems into its airports, according to new reports.
The airports authority, which owns and operates seven UK airports, has stated that self-service kiosks are becoming more popular as they increase the speed of the checking-in process and take up much less room than conventional check-in desks .
British Airways, in response to the growing popularity of self-service kiosks, now expects that around 80 per cent of its customers will be checking-in either via the internet or by using the touch screen facilities, which come in both generic form and for specific airlines .
A BAA spokesman commented: "Most of the major airlines now have their own self-service touch-screen desks . Virgin Airlines, British Airways and United Airlines each have their own self-service facilities."
"With most modern airports, part of their design is centered on touch screen self-service, so most people will check-in online or at the airport with touch screen check-in systems and present their passport to the machine which will print their boarding cards ."
The spokesman added air passengers can then proceed to a speedy baggage (drop-off) point instead of having to endure a potentially lengthy queuing process.
