Edinburgh has been named the UKs most favourite holiday city in a new poll carried out by the Guardian newspaper.
The Scottish capital took The UK's favourite destinations for a domestic city break title in the Guardian Travel Awards, making it eight years in a row at the top of the newspaper's holiday list.
To mark the award, VisitScotland issued some tips and advice for holidaymakers planning a break to the Scottish city .
The tourist site revealed: "Edinburgh truly sparkles in the winter months and the Winter Festivals programme has just been launched - including the great Scottish Santa Run, the Highland Village Christmas Market and the Winter Wonderland - not to mention the biggest New Year's celebration on the 31st of December with Edinburgh's Hogmanay."
Edinburgh was also described by The Lonely Planet travel guide as being "unique" and added that it is set apart by its "tourism, its proximity to England, and its multicultural population".
"There's up-to-the-nanosecond dance clubs in 15th-century buildings and fire breathers outside Georgian mansions: this is a place that knows how to blend ancient and modern," the travel guide added.
Other UK cities named in the Guardian awards included Cardiff, Cambridge and Leeds, although London didnt even make the top ten and was ranked as the 17th best city for a holiday .
Winners from other categories in the poll included: Singapore Airlines, which maintained its top spot as the Best Long-Haul Airline, while Jet2.com saw off competition from KLM to be named as the Best Short-Haul Airline .
The German city of Berlin was deemed the best European city of UK holidaymakers to visit, with Hong Kong taking the crown for Favourite Overseas City .
In terms of popular foreign destinations, Switzerland edged out both Norway and Sweden in the Favourite European Country section, while Cambodia picked up the award for Favourite long-haul country.
