Australia's Kangaroo Island has been named the Asia Pacific region's best-maintained tourist destination, according to a new survey .
Australia's third largest island, situated just eight miles off the shore of South Australia, also came seventh out of 111 global destinations in the National Geographic Traveller magazine survey .
Around 522 tourism experts took part in ranking the islands, which was based on their commitments to sustainable tourism and to environmental initiatives, with Kangaroo Island highly commended for its "pristine" condition.
A judge commented: "Recent tourism development has been sensitive to the environment and some of the natural areas on the island are still in excellent condition."
Kangaroo Island's environmental credentials helped it beat off competition from other tourist hotspots such as the Hawaiian Islands, the Maldives and Tasmania, to claim the title.
The island's wildlife and nature attractions are key factors in attracting overseas tourists .
During the winter period, the island plays host to koalas, kangaroos, echidnas, waders and ospreys, which helps bring in thousands of travellers, according to the South Australian tourism commission's website .
