Brits choose New York as their number one choice for a Christmas shopping trip, according to new figures from ABTA - the Association of British Travel Agents .
ABTAs Sean Tipton, commented: "Every year we see a surge in business, particularly in November, of people travelling to New York ."
The travel association highlighted that the US is generally preferred for shopping, particularly for electrical gadgets and clothes, due to the strength of the pound against the US dollar .
"Its more and more the case, especially this year because the pound has hit the magic two dollar barrier. New York also gets a lot of attention from the media encouraging people to go for that reason," added Tipton.
The figures also revealed that Christmas markets in Germany and Eastern Europe are becoming more and more popular, with travellers attracted by the cultural experience as well as the shopping .
The increase in winter trips abroad has resulted in a boost for the UKs aviation industry, with Stansted the most popular airport for travelling to Europe and Heathrow the number one airport hub for long haul flights .
Winter holidaymakers seeking out a trip to the US between now and December can take advantage of Virgin Airlines discount fares from Heathrow . The special offers run until 10pm on 31 October.
British Airways has also boosted the number of its flights to the US from Heathrow, beginning from March 2008.
