UK travel operators are gearing up for a huge increase in travel activity over the up-coming Xmas period as consumers look to foreign markets for their shopping, a holiday expert has revealed.
Harold Burke, sales director of Grand UK Holidays, told Travelweekly.co.uk that demand for the Christmas markets is increasing, with most bookings coming from regular clients .
"They go for the atmosphere and the shopping . All feedback shows Christmas markets are a nice experience and get people in the mood for Christmas," he said.
According to Burke, Germany has traditionally been a popular destination with festive shoppers, as it hosts a wide range of markets and is relatively cheap and convenient for UK travellers .
Berlins Gendarmenmarkt square is set to host a number of markets between November 26th and December 31st which will feature a mixture of "traditional craftsmen, culinary allurements, and magic moments" such as fireworks, clowns, acrobats and choirs.
Also on show in the capital will be a 700 square metre ice rink - Berlin on Ice which will allow visitors the chance to get their skating boots on.
The giant ice rink is surrounded by pagoda tents which will provide catering delicacies and a "varied cultural programme".
