Durham Edges Out Major Cities As Top Tourist Destination

Wed, 05 Sep 2007

Durham, one of the Britain’s smallest cities, has been voted the top tourist destination in the latest Condé Nast Traveller Awards .

The city, which features one of the UK’s best-preserved Norman castles and a 12th century cathedral overlooking the Wear, beat cities such as London, Edinburgh and Manchester to the top spot.

Despite London being ranked as the favourite British destination for holidaymakers who seek restaurants, nightlife and entertainment, it was denied top spot recognition due to its high prices, unclean streets and ever increasing safety-fears.

The magazine, which included more than 30,000 of its readers being questioned for the survey, also revealed that India is the most popular country to visit, followed by Italy and Thailand .

Sydney was voted the top overseas city, with New York coming second and Paris third, while The Maldives took top spot for the best island destination.

Hotels were also included in the survey, with Raymond Blanc's Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons in Oxfordshire voted best hotel in the UK, followed by Chewton Glen spa hotel in Hampshire.
