The average price of a night in a UK hotel has increased by 17 per cent during the second quarter of this year, making them the most expensive in Europe, new figures have revealed.
The price index from Hotels.com, which is based on the rates of 30,000 hotels across 1,500 global locations and on the actual prices paid by consumers rather than advertised rates, revealed that London is now the fourth most expensive city in the world.
In contrast, the average prices in major US cities, except New York, saw a drop by 0.5 per cent in prices to £71 per night - making US hotels on average 20 per cent cheaper than their European counterparts during this years second quarter period.
The average price for a night in London now costs travellers £119, compared to £110 throughout the rest of Britain, although these figures are some way behind Europes most expensive city Moscow, with a room in the Russian capital costing £192 per night.
The cheapest city on the whole was South Africas Cape Town, with an average nightly rate of £55.
Patrik Oqvist, Hotels.com marketing director, said: "While pierces across Europe are up, many major global cities have actually experienced a price drop since last year, making some destinations great value for tourists ."
