British tourists and travellers tend to search and book trips for the Christmas period up to 12 months in advance, new research from the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has revealed.
With the summer now officially over, the Xmas festive season is next in line for eager holidaymakers planning on a getaway break from the UK .
"People do tend to plan ahead because it's so busy and it's such a short period of time," a spokesman for ABTA said.
"Each year, early bookings for Christmas getaways tend to exceed those of the year before," he added.
According to the Office of National Statistics, the number of visits taken by UK residents increased by two per cent for the year up to June 2007 compared to the preceding year, taking 69.5 million holidays in total.
Although trips to European destinations dropped slightly as a percentage of these breaks, holidays to the US and other tourist hot-spots outside Europe rose by nine per cent in popularity for the same 12-month period.
