Trips to Syria are becoming increasingly popular with European tourists searching for a historic holiday destination, according to new reports by the BBC .
Recent figures released by the country's government have shown a 23 per cent increase in visitor numbers in the first quarter of 2008.
Speaking to the BBC, Audley Travel spokesman Andrew Hunt explained that the Middle Eastern nation attracts both holidaymakers and those looking for investment opportunities.
"Syria has a very strong historical bent - more so than anywhere else - and a lot of Gulf Arab money has been channelled into the country," he commented.
According to Hunt, demand for holidays among western tourists is stronger than ever and that according to Syrian news agency Sana, visitors from Italy, the Netherlands and the UK seem the most keen to experience the countrys rich history.
But despite the country greatly appealing to those with a keen interest in history and culture, Hunt added that neighbouring Jordan will continue to remain a more popular holiday choice due to its greater level of "diversity".
