Bank Holiday travellers are being urged to ensure they take out comprehensive travel insurance and motor breakdown cover before setting off on their mini-breaks .
Price comparison site moneysupermarket.com has advised Brits to take precautions ahead of the up-coming May Day, with a week's UK travel cover currently available from just £6.20 for a family of four and annual motor breakdown cover from £42.
The website added that city break enthusiasts, who hold annual European cover, can add UK cover to their policy free of charge.
This years May Day weekend is expected to be busier than ever with people taking to the motorway for local trips instead of jet-setting abroad.
Last year, over 200 million Brits took an overnight holiday in the UK and with the pound currently struggling against the Euro, travel experts expect even more people will take their mini-breaks within the UK this year.
Richard Mason, insurance director at moneysupermarket.com, said: "Holidaying in the UK is like any trip, requires adequate insurance - lost or stolen personal possessions, cancellations, medical emergencies and motor breakdowns are not limited to exotic locations."
"The last thing holidaymakers want is to interrupt a well-deserved break by stumping up an extortionate breakdown call-out fee or to replace personal possessions."
"With competitive deals available for UK travel and motor breakdown cover it's better to take precautions than have to pay out more after the event," he added.
