UK holidaymakers are increasingly choosing to travel by train instead of air travel, according to rail operator Virgin Trains .
The industry expert claimed that more and more people are considering rail travel in a positive way and following the example set by mainland Europe, where this mode of transport is a more popular choice among travellers.
"More and more people are choosing it as a means to get to destinations they might have previously gone to by car or plane," said Philippa Richardson, communications manager for Virgin Trains .
"I think that people will certainly look at the option of going by rail in a more favourable light," she added.
Last month saw the London Assembly vote to ban its member from using air travel to get to Paris, Brussels or anywhere in mainland Britain on any assembly business matters in an attempt to increase the use of greener methods of transport .
Darren Johnson, who proposed the motion, said that opting for short-haul flights over "clear practical rail alternatives" could not be sustainable.
Rail services from Virgin Trains run from London Euston and Birmingham New Street to a wide range of nationwide destinations.
