The Thomas Cook Travel Group has announced the completion of a deal to acquire luxury tour operator Elegant Resorts for an undisclosed sum.
Thomas Cook chief executive, Manny Fontenla-Novoa, said the acquisition will allow the group to "enhance its lucrative position" in the travel market .
"Elegant Resorts has a very strong brand name, associated with luxury, style and bespoke holidays and fully supports our strategic aim to become a leading independent travel provider," he added.
Thomas Cook refused to comment on how much it had paid for the luxury tour operator, but did confirm that Elegant Resorts will continue to trade under its current name.
Thomas Cook has long been established as one of the UKs most popular travel operators . Last year saw nearly 19 million people travel aboard with the group to destinations across Europe and North America .
In addition, the tour operator has a fleet of 97 aircraft, over 3,000 shops and operates 46 holiday properties, including hotels, apartments and villas .
