The regeneration of Britains coastal resorts has led to them fast becoming a "viable holiday option" for British travellers, an industry expert has claimed.
According to Sian Brenchley, spokesperson for tourism agency VisitBritain, Britains seaside towns have a great deal to offer domestic holidaymakers, with resorts increasingly starting to target particular markets with their offerings.
"Englands seaside resorts have really regenerated in recent years and we are now able to offer the domestic holidaymaker a lot more than in previous years," she said.
"Brighton's a kind of fashion Mecca (appealing) to younger people, and you've also got coastal resorts around the UK capitalising on the food revolution - like Whitstable offering oysters ."
Earlier this month culture secretary Andy Burnham announced plans to invest millions of pounds in seaside towns including Blackpool, Dover and Torbay, as part of the government's Sea Change funding initiative.
