British Tourists To Put A Halt On Tipping

Thu, 28 Aug 2008

New research has revealed that many British holidaymakers are hoping to save money on their trips this year by tipping less, as the credit crunch continues to eat away at people’s finances .

A survey by the Post Office found that over one in three (36 per cent) UK tourists will only tip on their holidays if they receive outstanding service, while 13 per cent stressed they will not pay a penny extra for services regardless of how well they are provided.

The most generous tourists surveyed were found to be in the east of England, with some 55 per cent of the region’s residents saying they still plan to tip this year, closely followed by Scots and people from northern England .

Helen Warburton, head of travel services for the Post Office, advised holidaymakers to research the tipping custom of their holiday destination before heading abroad .

She added that in some countries such as the US, giving a "little extra" for service is considered "really important".

"Familiarising yourself with the tipping culture will lessen your chance of causing offence and stop you spending money unnecessarily," she continued. "Do always take some small notes and coins in the local currency just in case."
