One in five Brits are planning on taking an overnight trip within Britain over the festive period, according to new figures from VisitBritain .
The national tourism agency says 9.8 million British residents, or 21 per cent of the UK population, will opt to spend some time away from home but in their own country during the next fortnight.
VisitBritain says the findings signal a potential boom for Britains tourism businesses in 2009 thanks to the weak value of the pound.
The tourism body believes the increasing strength of the Euro and other currencies against the pound will attract more visitors from the Eurozone and America to the UK.
At the same time, the deepening recession will lead to more Brits opting to take domestic breaks instead of an overseas holiday as they look to tighten their spending.
Amanda Smyth, head of England marketing for VisitBritain, said: "This is a real chance to remind Britons that a holiday in their own country can easily rival overseas destinations."
"Come the New Year, tourism businesses from accommodation to attractions will demonstrate the deals and offers available on a wealth of experiences around the country."
