Airport operator BAA has announced that its air hubs recorded an overall increase of 18 per cent in the number of people travelling to Hong Kong and China in January, on the previous month.
The 1.3 per cent rise in air traffic from BAA airports including Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick was achieved despite a 2 per cent decrease in the total number of passengers handled at the hubs in December 2007.
In total, 10.1 million passengers passed through the gates of BAA's UK airports during January this year 800,000 less than the previous month.
Edinburgh Airport, with a 3.9 per cent passenger growth, was the best performer in the BAA group during January, recording a 3.9 per cent passenger growth on the same period last year.
The Scottish hub was one of only two airports to see growth in activity the other bring Gatwick, which recorded an increase of one per cent.
While air traffic to Hong Kong and China rose considerably for the month, sectors including domestic traffic, north Atlantic travel and European charter activity saw traffic drop across UK airports operated by BAA .
Speaking to the BBC, BAA spokesman Donald Morrison said that continuing economic uncertainty is likely to have had an effect on demand for air travel .
