The UK has become a key short-break destination for local and foreign holidaymakers, according to a leading tourism body.
VisitBritain claims that UK destinations, including Edinburgh and Birmingham, are favourites with holidaymakers in Britain and especially those from the US .
Elliot Frisby, corporate PR manager for VisitBritain, commented: "Domestic tourism has changed so much in the last five or ten years, and people who have not visited Britain in the last five years will find it a very different experience now."
Frisby added that many parents also treat themselves to what he described as "nostalgia tourism", which involves mums and dads sharing trips to destinations they sought as a youth with their children .
Visit Britain highlighted Cumbria and the Lake District as popular destinations outside of London for tourists in the UK, while Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh were named as top city break locations.
The travel group stated that tourism is the UKs fifth largest industry, worth £85 billion and including a total of 2.1 million employees in the sector.
