A romantic weekend away is the most desired gift for Brits this Valentines Day, according to new research .
A survey by discount travel website Alpharooms.com found that 56 per cent of Brits would most like to be treated to an amorous getaway to mark the occasion this year.
Men were found most likely to opt for a beach holiday and women a city break, although forty per cent of those polled said they had no preference over their choice of destination-type as long as they were with their partner.
However, the poll discovered that people will be let down when it comes to other types of gift, with over sixty per cent of Britons expected to be disappointed by their partners choice of present this year.
Sarah Beale of alpharooms.com said: "It was surprising to see that the majority of people expected to receive nothing at all on Valentine's Day and it seems that as a nation we're still not very imaginative with our gifts ."
The Association of Independent Tour Operators has revealed that city breaks are traditional favourites among those heading abroad for Valentine's Day, with Paris being one of the most popular locations.
But the tour body added that travellers are increasingly seeking getaways to more off-beat destinations, such as Marrakech and Reykjavik .
