Gatwick Airport has taken its first step towards allowing passengers to carry more than one item of hand luggage on board flights .
The London-based airport is relaxing the one-bag ruling for hand luggage on some of its connecting flights to begin with, but has promised to extend the rule change to all services at the airport in the near future.
The move, which came into effect yesterday, means that passengers on flights connecting through the North Terminal at Gatwick will be able to carry more than one item of cabin baggage, matching the current situation for the airport's South Terminal.
However, the change still depends on the rules of individual airlines, with Gatwick adding that the one-bag limit will remain in place for all other flights .
A Gatwick statement said: "This rule will be relaxed in the near future when the ongoing construction project to upgrade and expand the security facilities at the airport is completed."
During recent months the airport has been busy with its efforts to increase the number of security lanes it offers to passengers, as well as the number of relevant staff it employs, in order to meet a deadline set by the DfT.
The Department for Transport has given all UK airports until May 31 to have the security arrangements in place for the relaxation of hand baggage restrictions.
The airport has promised that another seven security lanes will be open by Easter, following the six that were introduced last July bringing the total number of security lanes at Gatwick to 35.
There are still a number of other major UK airports that have not relaxed the one item rule, including Luton airport, East Midlands airport and Liverpool airport .
