UK tourists have been warned against travelling to the centres of both Mombasa and Nairobi unless it is essential following "serious unrest" in parts of Kenya .
Officials from the High Commission are monitoring the situation in the country and will update travel advice on regular intervals following Sunday’s presidential elections which resulted in wide-scale violence.
At least 200 people are reported to have died in ethnic violence and rioting which included an attack on a church where over 30 people were being burnt alive.
The Foreign Office, which states that up to 26,000 British tourists visit Kenya each year, advised Brits currently in the country to remain indoors, adding: "If you need to travel you should exercise caution and seek advice locally."
The travel advice update from the Foreign office read: "There continues to be serious unrest in parts of Kenya, particularly in urban centres, following the announcement of the presidential election results."
"We strongly recommend that you obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling ."
