British holidaymakers are increasing their spending on traditional package holidays, with total spending in the UK rising to £11 billion last year, a new study has revealed.
The 6 per cent rise in package holiday revenue is reported in the UK Tour Operators report for 2007, released by market research company Market and Business Development.
The report shows package holiday business growth topped the overall growth in total holiday revenues, which was up by 4 per cent to £24.6 billion last year.
Market analyst Beth Ramsden said the rise - where package holidays accounted for nearly 50 per cent of the total holiday expenditure - was largely attributed to a rise in demand for long-haul trips .
"We expect the levels of growth will be more muted in 2008, reflecting lower levels of consumer spending," she added.
Ramsden said although the slowdown in the economy will result in a just 2 per cent growth for total holiday expenditure this year, annual spend on holidays in the UK will rise to an estimated £27.3 billion by 2012.
