Turkey has become the top foreign destination for British holidaymakers, knocking Spain off its traditional number one spot, a new report by the Co-operative travel has found.
The independent travel retailers analysis of more than 200,000 recent bookings to the top 30 foreign holiday locations found that nearly a third more Britons are heading to Turkey this summer compared with last summer.
As a result, the country has ousted Spain as the top holiday hot spot for British travellers having held the position for the last 40 years.
The strength of the euro and the reduction in availability of low-cost holiday packages to short-haul western Mediterranean resorts from high street holiday companies such as Thomas Cook were cited as possible reasons for what experts described as a "seismic shift".
"Turkey has benefited most from this trend and we're seeing 30 per cent growth in bookings for holidays across all parts of the country," commented Trevor Davis, head of retail distribution for the Co-op Travel .
The groups research found that the average price of a holiday to Turkey is as much as £108 cheaper than to Majorca - £357 compared to £465.
