Bmi has began trialling a new electronic boarding system on a number of routes from Londons Heathrow Airport .
The new paperless system allows passengers to check in for their flights online and have their boarding pass delivered to them via their mobile phone or digital device, providing the handsets include of picture messaging capabilities.
The budget carrier claims it is the first British airline to test the new eco-friendly system and hopes the trial will prove that paperless boarding will provide a "quicker and smoother airport experience" and help it maintain its status as one of the UK's most punctual airlines .
Peter Spencer, the airlines managing director, commented: "Bmis new paperless boarding system is a significant step forward and will offer customers the opportunity to bypass check-in processes at the airport ."
"Customers who check in online can have a boarding pass delivered straight to their mobile phone allowing them to proceed straight to security or to bmi's fast bag-drop stations if they have luggage to check-in."
The new facility was first tested on routes from Edinburgh and Manchester to Heathrow and from Belfast City to the London airport .
