New research has revealed the preferences of British holidaymakers, with a sandy beach in Europe topping the list of priorities for a summer getaway .
According to a survey by Abbey, 26 per cent of travellers are planning a holiday in Europe this summer, while a further 57 per cent said they would like to escape to a destination free of their fellow Brits.
The company said an ideal holiday location that fits such criteria is Cadiz in Spain, an area which boasts undeveloped natural beaches that have not been affected by the wave of tourism which has hit southern Spain .
France was also named as a location where travellers can enjoy stretches of beautiful beaches in luxury destinations such as Cannes, St Tropez and Biarritz .
The Abbey research also found that British tourists plan to spend an average of £1,650 whilst on their ideal holiday, despite the on-going effects of the credit crunch.
Reza Attar-Zadeh, director of savings and investments at Abbey, said: "Putting away £137 each month to pay for the average summer holiday is no small task, but there's nothing more satisfying than saving towards a goal."
