Cuba Urged To Take Advantage Of Global Tourism Markets

Tue, 10 Jun 2008

Cuba’s tourism sector should be setting its sights on the "entire global market", according to an industry expert.

The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) has claimed that the nation’s tourism industry is growing at a steady rate, with 562,000 people set to be employed in the sector by 2018, an increase of 1.2 per cent compared with current figures.

"We highly recommend that Cuba, as a destination, targets the entire global market rather than focus on specific markets," said WTTC economist, Amir Girgis.

"The rise of emerging markets creates a new source of travellers as well as travel destinations . Cuba should thus embrace globalisation and use it to their advantage," he added.

According to figures by the Cuban ministry of tourism, the Caribbean nation recorded 15 per cent growth in visitors in the first quarter of 2008 compared with the same period for the previous year.

Maria Elena Lopez, Cuba’s vice-minister of tourism, also revealed that the one-million mark for international tourist arrivals was achieved a full 22 days faster this year than in 2007.
