Broadband internet could soon be made available to air passengers after American Airlines announced it is to test in-flight broadband access on some of its fleet.
The US carrier said it has already completed the first aircraft installation of its Aircell broadband connectivity solution and plans to make the technology available on all 15 of its Boeing 767-200 planes, which mainly fly transcontinental routes.
The Aircell system will provide passengers with fast internet access, virtual private networks and email via Wi-Fi enabled laptops, portable gaming devices and personal digital assistants.
Aircell executive Dave Bijur said the e-travel facility will be able to handle "a planeload of passengers all wanting to access the internet" .
Although passengers with American Airlines will be required to pay for the privilege of using the internet, some websites will be accessible free of charge including the airline's official website, handy for gate information and flight times.
