Trips to New York were taken by record 7.6m foreign visitors last year, making it the most popular tourist destination in the US, according to new research.
Latest figures from the US department of commerce revealed that Los Angles was the second most popular American hotspot, with some 2.7m visitors, followed by Miami and San Francisco, both with 2.3m visitors.
Orlando recorded 2.1m people visiting its tourist attractions, while the cities of Las Vegas, Honolulu and Washington also made the list of popular destinations, with 1.7m, 1.6m and 1.2m visitors respectively.
New York also claimed the title of ‘number one US state’ for 2007, seeing off competition from California and Florida .
The government research highlighted the importance of international tourism to the American economy, with foreign visitors contributing a total of $122bn (£62.3bn) of tourism spending in 2007.
The New York Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, recently announced that the city’s rise in tourism meant it is expected to reach its goal of 50m total annual visitors by 2012, a full thee years ahead of its original target.
