Sports holidays are now regarded as one of the most crucial sectors of Fijis travel industry, according to local government official.
The countrys Interim tourism minister Tom Ricketts reportedly told visitors last weeks sixth annual Dive Fiji Expo that sport tourism is now a multi-billion dollar business and is one of the fastest growing service industries.
According to a recent industry report, sales in the dive industry amounted to F$804m (£272.3m) in 2007, an increase of 5 per cent on the previous year.
Mr Ricketts added that events such as the Dive Expo were crucial for "promoting tourist activities available in Fiji and providing a way to tap into the sports tourism industry".
"I understand the staging of this Dive Expo
is an extraordinary achievement in that it has recognised diving as a sport and helped promote it as special event," he said.
Made up of more than 300 islands in the South Pacific Ocean, Fiji offers travellers a range of activities, including snorkelling, rafting, caving, hiking and rock climbing.
