Four major UK airlines have joined forces to protest against yesterdays announcement by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to raise landing charges at both Heathrow and Gatwick airport .
The move by Britains aviation watchdog will enable airport owner BAA to increase landing charges at Heathrow and Gatwick over the next five years from £10.36 to £19.31 and £5.61 to £8.36 respectively.
A joint statement by airlines Virgin Atlantic, easyJet, bmi, and Ryanair has been released stating how the increases will hurt consumers and follow significant increases in charges at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted in recent years.
The airlines, along with carriers British Airways and Flybe, have called for a complete overhaul of the UKs aviation regulatory system, a halt on the price proposals and help from the secretary of state in resolving the CAA's faults.
In addition, the airlines have called for the break-up of the BAA, criticising the state of its finances by claiming debts attributed to Spanish owner Grupo Ferrovial may threaten BAA's financial sustainability.
