Backpacking travellers have been urged to ensure that they have adequate insurance before embarking on their adventure.
A spokesman for leading online travel agent Trailfinders has advised backpackers to avoid taking expensive items with them on holiday, as some policies only provide insurance up to a certain value.
The travel expert suggested that backpackers generally require a "very different" type of insurance policy, for example one which includes a 24-hour medical assistance helpline.
"The big piece of advice is that a backpacker shouldnt pick their policy based on price alone, they need to pick it on the quality of what theyre going to get rather than the cheapest policy they can find online," he explained.
But he added that backpackers who are only planning on taking "instantly replaceable" items could be eligible for a discount from their insurer by choosing not to cover their baggage .
According to a recent report by AA Insurance, backpackers carry more than £1 billion worth of valuables in their baggage each year, equal to approximately £450 worth of goods each.
