UK holidaymakers have been warned not to confuse credit card protection with travel insurance when travelling abroad .
According to APACS, the UK trading association for payments, last Octobers landmark ruling by the House of Lords, which confirmed that UK consumers would continue to be protected when purchasing goods overseas on their credit cards, could be misleading travellers.
APACS spokesperson, Mark Bowerman, said: "If you are concerned about having travel insurance then you need to seek advice from your insurance or your credit card company ."
"Try and make sure you know who you are dealing with; make sure to the best of your knowledge that it is a reputable company ."
Bowerman added that consumers would benefit more from using a credit card for transactions between £100 and £30,000 as it offers them extra protection compared to a debit card .
Last year, research by Sainsburys revealed that in order to save money on their summer holiday, up to 8.8 million people (18 per cent of the adult population) seek to book a last minute deal around two weeks or less before travelling.
However, the study also found that nearly one in five people (19 per cent) fail to take out travel insurance .
