Brits planning on flying from the newly built Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport will have to go through increased security measures before being able to board their flights .
According to reports, all domestic passengers will have their fingerprints and photographs taken once the state-of-the-art terminal opens for business later this month.
Passengers will be photographed at check-in and then asked to provide four fingerprints on a pad – a process which will be repeated before boarding a flight – to ensure that those arriving on international flights or in transit to another country cannot exchange boarding passes with a domestic passenger who has already checked in.
According to airport operator BAA, the biometric checks will help prevent criminals, terrorists and illegal immigrants from attempting to evade border controls, adding that passengers’ information would be destroyed within 24 hours.
Heathrow’s Terminal 5 is due to officially open to travellers on March 27 and is expected to serve an estimated four million passengers each year flying with British Airways .
