Travel Chaos And Wintry Weather To Hit Easter Travellers

Thu, 20 Mar 2008

The up-coming Easter weekend is set to be hit by long travel delays on roads and rail services across the country.

Extensive roadworks are likely to affect hundreds of thousands of UK travellers heading off for the long weekend break, with around 10 per cent more traffic than usual expected.

Motoring organisations have advised drivers to allow 50 per cent more time to complete their journeys over the Easter break, especially tomorrow lunchtime which has been highlighted as the peak time for road congestion.

A significant increase in traffic is also expected on Easter Monday with families rushing back home for the start of work and school on Tuesday.

The AA have warned motorists to try and avoid traffic hotspots such as the M5 south of Bristol, the M4 between London and Bristol and the M1 Nottingham to Chesterfield.

Travel experts said the exceptionally early date for Easter this year, which falls outside many school holidays, and rail disruptions were the main factors behind the increase in the number of cars taking to the road this weekend .

According to the Association of Train Operating Companies (Atoc), roughly 3 million rail passengers travelling from major railway stations over Easter are also facing a weekend of travel misery due to engineering work .

Services running from London’s Clapham Junction – the UK’s largest railway station - will face disruption due to a major project to renew tracks being carried out, while Euston station will be closed to Virgin West Coast services over the weekend . Additional closures on the East Coast and South West main lines are also expected.

The rail watchdog Passenger Focus is warning rail users to plan ahead to avoid the disruption.

In addition, the RAC said an expected cold snap could add to travel problems over the weekend, with snow and icy conditions forecast for Scotland and some parts of north eastern and eastern England .

Motorists are being advised to only make journeys that are necessary if weather conditions are bad.
