Thu, 01 May 2008

Thousands of Brits are expected to make the most of the up-coming May bank holiday with mini trips to sunshine hotspots, according to easyJet .

The budget airline has revealed it expects some 450,000 passengers to use its flights over the long weekend to escape the predicted cold and wet UK weather for the coming weekend .

The Iberian destinations of Alicante, Faro and Malaga are set to be the top holiday hotspots among British travellers, while Edinburgh is expected to be the number one city break location, followed by Amsterdam, Barcelona and Geneva .

The firm’s PR executive Marianne West said: "More people than ever are taking advantage of their bank holiday weekends, with over 450,000 passengers jetting off across Europe with easyJet to soak up a little sun or experience a few cultural days away on a city break ."

"It's impossible to rely on the great British weather and, let's face it, sunshine and relaxation is far more appealing than DIY."

EasyJet, which operates the majority of its flights from Gatwick Airport, also announced plans to launch new flights from Manchester to Alicante .

As of 29th September, the low cost airline will offer four flights a week with fares from £27.99 one way or £47.98 return including tax .

The move further highlights the continuing popularity of Alicante as a starting point for holidays in the Costa Blanca, and Benidorm in particular, with EasyJet expected to carry almost 60,000 passengers on the route in the first 12 months of operation .

Carly Brear, easyJet’s UK commercial manager, said: "This announcement so soon after we commenced flying from Manchester is proof of the fantastic support we have had to date from the people of Manchester and surrounding areas.
