British Airways has been voted as having the UK airline sector’s best-performing website, according to a new survey by search engine-optimisation company NetCallidus.
The airline topped a new league table published by the company, which judged standings on airlines' market share by turnover to their online traffic levels.
While BA fared the best, Britain’s second-largest airline, Virgin Atlantic, was placed a disappointing fifth in the rankings, behind low-cost carrier rivals such as easyJet .
Commenting on the success of britishairways.com, NetCallidus's managing director Mark Furber said it was easy to see why the BA website was proving such a hit with consumers .
"In a nutshell, traffic from search engines comes down to how many pages you have indexed and how many quality links are pointing at those pages," Furber explained.
"The BA website has significantly more pages indexed in Google (147,000 in comparison to Virgin's 3,240), which means it has a much higher chance of being found for different search terms typed in."
The search engine’s top ten rankings also included Thomsonfly, Thomas Cook, BMI, Jet2.com, Flybe, Monarch and XL Airways.
